Which 4 UC PIQs should I pick? Does the choice itself matter?
Senior in CA applying to UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, UCI and UCSB. I have to pick 4 of the 8 prompts and I have no idea if certain ones look better.
My plan was leadership, creativity, talent and community. But my actual best story is about working at my dad's restaurant every weekend since I was 12, and I don't know which prompt that even goes under. Probably not "talent"? Maybe it's an "obstacle" thing? It's not sad though, I like it.
Also do the PIQs get scored individually or as a set? My counselor said readers prefer you avoid the "academic subject" one but I'm not sure that's true.

No prompt is scored higher than another, and all four are read together as a picture of you. So pick the prompts that let you tell your four best, least overlapping stories, not the ones that sound most impressive.
On the restaurant: that is a strong story and it can fit more than one prompt depending on the angle.
- **Leadership:** if you trained new staff, ran the register on busy nights, or handled problems.
- **Significant challenge:** it does not have to be sad. Balancing work and school every weekend since 12 is a real constraint you managed.
- **Community:** if the restaurant serves a particular neighborhood or community and you have a role in it.Pick one angle so it does not bleed into a second PIQ.
A good process:
1. List your six to eight best stories first, ignoring prompts.
2. Match each to a prompt.
3. Pick the four that cover the most different sides of you: work, school, a talent or interest, and community or challenge. The academic subject prompt is fine if you have a real story there. Nothing is off limits. Each answer is 350 words max, so spend them on specifics.
Reminder that UC reads the PIQs plus your activities list together. If the restaurant is in the activities list, the PIQ should add what the list cannot.
