The biggest employer of UC graduates is UC

Five years after their bachelor’s, the University of California itself (a campus, a medical center or the system) is the most common employer of graduates at 9 of the nine campuses. The next name on the list differs by campus: Kaiser Permanente at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA and UC Riverside; Google at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz; Amazon at UC Merced and UC San Diego. At UC Berkeley that is 319 Google job records in UC’s sample.

Software engineer is the most common title in the UC Berkeley sample five years out, with 910 records, followed by UC San Diego with 683. Pick a campus and a year below.

UC prints employer names as they appear on the profiles, so one organization can show up under two names (a campus and its health system, for example). We have not merged any.

Titles such as law clerk, summer associate or resident physician are jobs usually held during law or medical school, so this group likely includes some graduates who were still studying for a graduate degree they had not finished.

What these counts are and are not

UC built this from public online career profiles matched to its own records of who graduated. Only some graduates have a profile that could be matched, and people in some jobs keep an online profile more often than others. The counts are job records in that sample, not head counts of all alumni. UC does not publish a way to scale them up to every graduate, so we have not.

Every figure here is for graduates whose highest finished degree is their UC bachelor’s. UC’s dashboard also shows graduates who went on to a master’s, law, medical or doctoral degree; those are on our graduate degrees page. Years out are counted from the year of the bachelor’s degree.

Where every number comes from

We downloaded these files ourselves and computed every figure on this page from them. Where a publisher left a value blank for privacy, we left it blank too.
