College counseling questions

Is a private college counselor worth it?

By Leo Cao, CEO of Aristo Scholars · Updated

A private college counselor is worth it when your student needs more individual time on essays, school list and planning than their school counselor can give, and when you hire someone with a verified credential and a written scope.

It is not worth it if you expect a guarantee or someone to write the essays. No honest counselor offers either.

Who you would work with

17 counselors on the roster, each with a university credential verified against documents before their page went live.

What a private counselor adds

School counselors do essential work, and many look after a large number of students at once. A private counselor adds time: regular one-on-one meetings, line-by-line feedback on drafts, a college list built around the student, and someone tracking every deadline with the family.

When it is probably not worth it

  • Your student already has strong support at school and a clear plan.
  • The counselor will not tell you who will actually do the work.
  • The price or scope is not in writing before you pay.
  • Anyone offers to write, ghostwrite or heavily rewrite application essays.

How to judge value

Compare what you get, not only the price: how often you meet, how many applications and essay reviews are included, how quickly the counselor replies, and when the engagement ends. Ask for those in writing. Aristo Scholars puts all of them in the agreement, charges the same for every counselor, and reviews essays within three business days.

Questions families ask

Do private college counselors improve your chances?
A counselor can help a student present their strengths clearly, write stronger essays in their own voice and apply to a well-built list. No counselor can promise an outcome, and none should.
When should you hire a college counselor?
Many families start in 10th or 11th grade, which leaves time for course choices, activities and essays. Aristo Scholars works with students from 7th grade through senior year, and takes seniors through November 1.
