chance me: 3.5 UW but 9th grade was a disaster, does an upward trend actually count
9th grade was rough (3.0 UW, family stuff + I just didn't care). 10th was 3.6 and 11th was a 3.9 with 3 APs. Cumulative is 3.5 UW / 3.8 W.
SAT 1400 (710 M, 690 RW). Want to major in psych. Applying to Ohio State, Pitt, Northeastern, Syracuse, Indiana, and maybe one reach like Boston College.
ECs are pretty normal: peer tutoring, part-time job at Target, yearbook editor, a psych research summer program at a local college (paid, not super selective).
Does the trend really matter or do they just look at the 3.5? And should I explain 9th grade somewhere or will it sound like excuses?

Your 1400 is above the middle of the range at several of those schools. Submit it where it helps.
The trend counts. Readers look at your grades year by year, not only the cumulative number, and a rise from 3.0 to 3.6 to 3.9 with harder classes is one of the clearest positive signals on a transcript. Some schools also recalculate GPA and give more weight to later years.
Should you explain 9th grade? If there was real family context, yes, briefly, in the additional information section: two or three factual sentences, what happened, what changed. Not an essay. If it was just "I didn't care," you can say that too in one line, and let the trend speak.
Rough read: Indiana, Pitt and Ohio State are reasonable to likely, Syracuse is a target, Northeastern and BC are reaches. A strong senior fall keeps the trend going, which matters for any school that sees midyear grades.
