The Harvard prompts, quoted

Every applicant (750 words)

  • “Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a student body with a diversity of perspectives and experiences. How will the life experiences that shaped who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?”

Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants (Harvard Questions in the Common App) · Required for this group

Pick one part of your background and one moment where it mattered, then show what it changed in how you act now. A survey of your whole life in 150 words reads as a list, and readers have the rest of the file for that.

  • “Describe a time when you strongly disagreed with someone about an idea or issue. How did you communicate or engage with this person? What did you learn from this experience?”

Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants · Required for this group

Readers want the actual exchange: who it was, what each of you said, and what you did next. An answer that ends on everyone should listen more reads like all the others; the specific habit you changed afterward is what they remember.

  • “Briefly describe any of your extracurricular activities, employment experience, travel, or family responsibilities that have shaped who you are.”

Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants · Required for this group

Choose the commitment where your own part is clearest, even if it is not the biggest line on your list, and spend the words on what you did that someone else in your seat would not have.

  • “How do you hope to use your Harvard education in the future?”

Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants · Required for this group

Goals read as believable when they grow out of something already in the file. Connect the future you describe to one concrete thing you have done, and keep it specific enough to check.

  • “Top 3 things your roommates might like to know about you.”

Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants · Required for this group

This is the kind of question readers look forward to, because it is where a file starts to sound like a person. Answer it literally and specifically: a real, slightly odd detail does more than a profound one, and 150 words is enough for one image followed all the way through.

How many words the Harvard supplement takes

750 words for every applicant, counting each choice once at its limit.

A plan for writing the Harvard set

Harvard gives every question the same small limit, so the skill being tested is choosing. Decide first what each answer is for: the life experiences answer and the activity answer must not tell the same story, and the disagreement answer needs a real disagreement with a real person, including what you said. The roommates answer is the easiest to waste; three concrete, slightly unflattering habits tell a reader more than three adjectives. Read all the answers together at the end and cut anything the activities list already says.
