Why understatement works in college essays
How precise, proportionate claims make a college essay more credible to readers than a dramatic transformation story, especially in the final paragraph.
SourceBased on what we at Aristo learned from the Stanford admissions office.

Readers in Stanford's admissions office decide, essay by essay, how much of what an applicant claims they are willing to believe. Imagine two applicants who shadowed a surgical team. The first writes that in the operating room he realized his life's purpose was to be a heart surgeon, and that only Stanford can help him fulfill this dream. The second describes the team clicking into place around the table as the lead surgeon issued crisp commands, says he knew this was a field he wanted to pursue, and adds that Stanford seems an ideal place to do it. Most families would call the first essay more passionate. A reader with a full stack in front of her sees them very differently, and the reason reaches well beyond essays, into short answers and interviews.
