Does legacy still matter in college admissions in 2026?
Which colleges still consider legacy status in 2026, how state laws have changed the picture and how to check a college's policy before assuming an advantage.
SourceBased on what we at Aristo learned from the Stanford admissions office.

Legacy status once gave applicants a modest tip at many selective colleges, Stanford among them, and the picture in 2026 looks very different. Several states have restricted or barred legacy and donor preferences since that advice was first taught, some reaching private colleges as well as public ones, and a growing list of private colleges have dropped legacy on their own. Some never used it.
So the first step is to find out whether legacy counts at all at the colleges on your list. Many publish a statement on it, and if the policy is unclear, the admissions office will usually answer directly. Where it does count, families tend to overestimate it, and the details of who qualifies matter more than they expect.
