How admissions officers read an application, step by step
One account of the order readers go through a file, from transcript to essays, and how to check that your application tells one coherent story in that order.
SourceBased on what we at Aristo learned from the Stanford admissions office.

Admissions readers have discretion to open a file however they like, yet in the Stanford office we learned from, and in most offices like it, the sequence they follow is remarkably steady. Families rarely see it, because the application is assembled section by section over many months, by different people, and nobody hands the student a map of how it will be met on the other side of the desk.
That matters more than it sounds. Knowing the order lets a family see the application as a reader meets it, one layer at a time, and notice things about their own file they could never see from the inside.
