The UIUC prompts, quoted
If you apply to A first-choice major (300 words)
“Explain, in detail, an experience you’ve had in the past 3 to 4 years related to your first-choice major. This can be an experience from an extracurricular activity, in a class you’ve taken, or through something else.”
Limit: about 150 words · Who: First-year applicants applying to a major · Required for this group
Choose the commitment where your own part is clearest, even if it is not the biggest line on your list, and spend the words on what you did that someone else in your seat would not have.
“Describe your personal and/or career goals after graduating from Illinois and how your selected first-choice major will help you achieve them.”
Limit: about 150 words · Who: First-year applicants applying to a major · Required for this group
Readers check this answer against your transcript and activities, so it has to match them. Name the specific question, course or project that pulls you, show where the interest started, and point to what you would use at UIUC by its real name.
If you apply to Undeclared (Exploratory Studies) (300 words)
“What are your future career or academic goals? You may include courses you took in high school and how these impacted your goals.”
Limit: about 150 words · Who: Undeclared applicants (Division of Exploratory Studies), in place of the first-choice major prompts · Required for this group
“What are your academic interests? Please include 2-3 majors you’re considering at Illinois and why.”
Limit: about 150 words · Who: Undeclared applicants (Division of Exploratory Studies), in place of the first-choice major prompts · Required for this group
Added for A second-choice major (150 words)
“Please explain your interest in your second-choice major or your overall academic or career goals.”
Limit: about 150 words · Who: Only applicants who select a second-choice major (including Undeclared) · Required for this group
How many words the UIUC supplement takes
300 words, depending on the school you apply to, counting each choice once at its limit. Programs and honors colleges add their own: A second-choice major, 150 words.
A plan for writing the UIUC set
Illinois admits by major, and its essays exist to check that the major choice is real. The experience answer should be one concrete episode in the field, with what you did and what you learned, not a list. The goals answer should connect that experience to where the major leads, with enough detail that a faculty reader believes it. If you choose a second major, give it its own reason; a reader notices when the second answer is the first one reworded.
