The Rice prompts, quoted
Every applicant (800 words)
“Please explain what draws you to the academic areas you selected above and how you hope to explore them at Rice University.”
Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants (also QuestBridge) · Required for this group
Rice's readers see this answer more than any other, and most versions would survive a find-and-replace with another college's name. Try it on your draft: every sentence that still works with a rival's name in it has to go. What is left should be things you would actually use at Rice, each tied to something you have already done, and at this length that means one or two things, not a tour.
“Based upon your exploration of Rice University, what elements of the Rice experience appeal to you?”
Limit: 150 words · Who: All first-year applicants (also QuestBridge) · Required for this group
Answer one of these two
“The Residential College System is at the heart of Rice student life and is heavily influenced by the particular cultural traditions and unique life experiences each student brings. What life experiences and/or unique perspectives are you looking forward to sharing with fellow Owls in the residential college system?”
Limit: 500 words (choose one of two) · Who: All first-year applicants; optional for QuestBridge applicants · One of a choice
Pick one part of your background and one moment where it mattered, then show what it changed in how you act now. A survey of your whole life in 500 words reads as a list, and readers have the rest of the file for that.
“Rice is strengthened by its diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders and change agents across the world. What perspectives shaped by your background, experiences, upbringing, and/or cultural identity inspire you to join our community of change agents at Rice?”
Limit: 500 words (choose one of two) · Who: All first-year applicants; optional for QuestBridge applicants · One of a choice
Added for School of Architecture (500 words)
Described, not quoted: Why are you determined to study architecture? (Also asks how past experiences led you to apply to the Rice School of Architecture and whether an outside-school experience such as an internship, building project, or summer program strengthened your interest and commitment.)
Limit: 250 words · Who: Rice School of Architecture applicants · Required for this group
Rice's readers see this answer more than any other, and most versions would survive a find-and-replace with another college's name. Try it on your draft: every sentence that still works with a rival's name in it has to go. What is left should be things you would actually use at Rice, each tied to something you have already done.
Described, not quoted: Describe a building, place, or city that you have encountered and found especially compelling. (Also asks what captured your attention and why, and how it shaped your understanding of architecture and the built environment.)
Limit: 250 words · Who: Rice School of Architecture applicants · Required for this group
Readers check this answer against your transcript and activities, so it has to match them. Name the specific question, course or project that pulls you, show where the interest started, and point to what you would use at Rice by its real name.
Optional (up to no writing)
Described, not quoted: The Rice Box: submit a two-dimensional image of something that appeals to you (no explanation needed).
Limit: One image · Who: All applicants; page states the image is not used for evaluation · Optional
How many words the Rice supplement takes
800 words for every applicant, counting each choice once at its limit. Programs and honors colleges add their own: School of Architecture, 500 words.
A plan for writing the Rice set
Rice's two short answers are fit questions, so name the academic areas and the parts of Rice life you would actually use. Then pick the longer essay that gives you the better story: the residential college option suits someone with a tradition or habit to share, the other suits someone whose background shapes how they want to make change. The Rice Box image is not evaluated, so choose it for fun.
