The Emory prompts, quoted
Every applicant (350 words)
“What academic areas are you interested in exploring at Emory University and why?”
Limit: 200 words recommended · Who: All first-year applicants · Required for this group
Readers check this answer against your transcript and activities, so it has to match them. Name the specific question, course or project that pulls you, show where the interest started, and point to what you would use at Emory by its real name.
Answer one of these four
“Emory University has a strong commitment to building community. Tell us about a community that you have been part of where your personal participation helped to change or shape the community for the better.”
Limit: 150 words (choose one of four) · Who: All first-year applicants (Getting to Know You, pick one) · One of a choice
Name the group, your place in it, and one thing that is different because you were there. These answers fail by staying abstract; a scene with real people in it does the work that adjectives cannot.
“Reflect on a personal experience where you intentionally expanded your cultural awareness.”
Limit: 150 words (choose one of four) · Who: All first-year applicants (Getting to Know You, pick one) · One of a choice
Pick one part of your background and one moment where it mattered, then show what it changed in how you act now. A survey of your whole life in 150 words reads as a list, and readers have the rest of the file for that.
“Emory University's unique mission calls for service to humanity. Share how you might personally contribute to this mission of service to humanity.”
Limit: 150 words (choose one of four) · Who: All first-year applicants (Getting to Know You, pick one) · One of a choice
“In a scholarly community, differing ideas often collide before they converge. How do you personally navigate disagreement in a way that promotes progress and deepens meaningful dialogue?”
Limit: 150 words (choose one of four) · Who: All first-year applicants (Getting to Know You, pick one) · One of a choice
Readers want the actual exchange: who it was, what each of you said, and what you did next. An answer that ends on everyone should listen more reads like all the others; the specific habit you changed afterward is what they remember.
How many words the Emory supplement takes
350 words for every applicant, counting each choice once at its limit.
A plan for writing the Emory set
Emory's academic answer should name the areas you would explore and why, with one specific course, program or question at Emory. Then choose the short answer whose story you can tell in a single scene: the community option needs something that changed because you were there, and the disagreement option needs the actual exchange, not a lesson about dialogue.
